$622 million

As part of a joint venture, Zachry participated in the largest single project ever awarded by Bexar County: the University Health System (UHS) Sky Tower project in San Antonio. Part of the University Health System Capital Improvement Program, the expansion and redesign helped to transform UHS into one of the most technologically advanced medical centers in the nation.

This multi-phase project included the design and construction of the 10-story Sky Tower, which added an 84-bed emergency treatment center with 10 trauma rooms, 420 private patient rooms, and 35 operating suites on two floors. Renovations of existing buildings, expansion of a central utility plant and construction of a new 1.2-million-square-foot 3,300-space parking garage rounded out the phasing.

With construction activities taking place on an active hospital campus, the project required careful coordination in re-routing utilities and relocating numerous critical hospital facilities, such as MRI suites and Trauma centers. Dynamic sequencing and scheduling further minimized the operational impact to medical center’s staff and patients.

Built with sustainability in mind, Sky Tower anticipates achieving LEED Gold certification. Construction utilized local and regional building materials whenever possible, and the building’s design uses recycled water for landscape irrigation.

The hospital has decreased its fresh-water usage, despite doubling in size and having a third more green space than with its previous design. In addition, technology and lighting improvements have enabled Sky Tower to use nearly a third less energy than a standard building.
