Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Phase I
San Antonio, TX
City of San Antonio
November 2013 - February 2016
Zachry is currently participating in the joint-venture construction efforts to transform San Antonio’s Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center into one of the premier meeting facilities in the nation. The 2012 design–build contract cemented the largest capital project in the city to date.
The expansion project will include more than 800,000 square feet of new construction while renovating more than 78,000 square feet in the existing convention center, providing a combined facility footprint of more than 900,000 square feet. To better accommodate larger, more varied events, construction will add 260,000 square feet of new exhibition space, along with a 54,000 square-foot ballroom, the largest of its kind in Texas.
By shifting the building east, the convention center will now open up the new Hemisfair Park, while exposing the River Walk to convention attendees to create a definitive sense of place and becoming an iconic part of the San Antonio community.
In addition, a cantilevered room suspended over Market Street is unlike anything currently found in the U.S. Just inside the main entrance, the largest public indoor courtyard space in the city has been added to provide greater connectedness to the city’s urban core, while giving convention center visitors an incredible space to relax and refresh. This blending of the indoors and out was also carried out with the addition of balconies that allow attendees sweeping views of San Antonio.
The new, expanded convention center will feature 515,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, providing San Antonio with a competitive edge in the lucrative convention market by placing this facility in the top-10 largest contiguous exhibit spaces in the U.S.
The demolition of the older West Building, Phase II, will make room for the expansion of HemisFair Park, allowing for many other exciting changes yet to come to the community.
Zachry and its partners completed the first phase of the project — consisting of the new expanded portion — under budget and ahead of schedule, all while the complex remained operational.
