Grand Parkway segments on track for fall completion

Work is nearing completion on northern segment of roadway through Spring

Three sections of the Grand Parkway in north Houston are on track to be completed by the end of this year.

Members of the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce Mobility and Transportation Committee received an update on the progress of the Grand Parkway segments connecting U.S. 290 to Interstate 69.

"There are a lot of people who are interested in the course of the Grand Parkway," said Bruce Hillegeist, president of the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ibette Cavasos, public information officer for Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders, which is building segments F1, F2 and G between U.S. 290 in Cypress to I-69 north of Kingwood, said the three segments are on track to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015.

"It is currently on target," she said.

Motorists who use Texas 249 and the Tomball Tollway are reminded daily of the continued progress of the Grand Parkway, with the end of segment F1 and beginning of segment F2 spanning eastward toward Interstate 45 across Texas 249.

The materials used to build the Grand Parkway have been able to be produced at temporary facilities, such as the location at FM 2920 adjacent to the Klein Multipurpose facility.

"We had a pre-cast yard that actually formed the beams…in addition we had a concrete thatch plant, so we were able to coordinate (construction and delivery) schedules a little bit better than relying on outside resources," Cavasos said. "Houston is growing so fast and we needed to make sure we had what we needed to make this project happen."

Envisioned in the early 1960s, the Grand Parkway crosses seven counties and includes more than 180 miles of roadway.

The first segment, which connected I-69 to Interstate 10 west of Houston, has been in operation since 1994.

In 2011, the Texas Department of Transportation began construction on Segment E, which connected I-10 to U.S. 290.

That segment was completed in 2013.
