Ship Channel Constructors LLC (SCC), a joint venture between Zachry Construction Corporation and Traylor Bros., Inc., is constructing twin landmark cable-stayed bridges across the Houston Ship Channel while maintaining traffic on one of the region’s busiest roadways and waterways. The new bridges are designed to remove bridge foundations from the channel, supporting future widening and deepening of the waterway to accommodate larger vessels and strengthen the long-term capacity of the Port of Houston and the region’s maritime industry.
Construction is being completed in phases, beginning with the new southbound bridge adjacent to the existing structure. The main span incorporates composite steel girders with precast deck panels, while precast components and other construction innovations have been used to simplify complex operations, reduce temporary support requirements and improve constructability. Once the southbound bridge is complete and traffic is shifted, the existing bridge will be demolished to make way for construction of the new northbound bridge.
The project brings together complex bridge construction, marine operations, roadway improvements and carefully sequenced construction within an active transportation corridor. Throughout the work, SCC is coordinating major structural operations with roadway traffic and ongoing ship channel activity to maintain mobility.
